7. The Praja Mandal Movements in Himachal Pradesh & Himalayan Riyasti Praja Mandal




√"Praja' means 'Subjects' or 'People' while 'Mandal' means Society' or 'Party'. 

√Thus Praja mandal is an organization of the people to work for securing to them civil liberties and political rights. 

√The people of Praja mandal movements in Himachal hills fought against the oppressive and unjust rule of their freudal princes and the British administration simultaneously.

√The main objective of these movements was:

1. The democratization of administration.
2. Introduction of social reforms for the people living in the hills. 

√The struggle was thus directed with a specific object of throwing off not only the British paramountacy but also the rule of terror, high-handedness, slavery and feudalism perpetuated by the hill chieftains of varions princely states. 

√To provide dynamic direction to the movement the Himalayan States People's Federation was formed in 1937, with the object of coordinating the activities of the political and social workers in various hill states.


Himalayan Riyasti Praja Mandal

√In 1939 at a session of the All India States People's Conference was held at Ludhiana which led the people of Shimla Hill States to form a federation called the Himalayan Riyasti Praja Mandal on the Gandhian Principles. 

√The purpose was to direct and guide activities of political and social institutions and workers all over the hill states.

√The clarian call they gave was to:
1.  Resisttyranny
2. To refuse to pay unjust taxes
3. to fight against injustice 
4. Not to do any Begar or unpaid labour.
