16. Merger of Hill States with Indian Union

Ministry of State (Union of India) called upon the princely rulers led by Raja Joginder Sen of Mandi to a conference at Delhi on March 2, 1948

✓There the rulers were pursuaded to merge their states with the Indian Union.

✓The freedom movement rolled on with influx of new adherents in each state.

✓Revolution was shaking the Himalayas, and within a week three-fourths of the states had been liberated without firing a shot.

✓Ruler after ruler signed the merger agreement and Himachal came into being as the Chief Commissioner's province by merging 26 Shimla Hill States (except Nalagarh) and four Punjab Hill States.

✓These states were:
Bhagal,Baghat, Balson, Beja, Bhaji, Bushahr, Chamba, Darkoti, Dadhi, Delath, Dhami, Ghund, Jubbal, Keonthal, Khaneti, Koti, Kunihar, Kuthar, Kumarsain, Madhan, Mandi, Mangal Mehlog, Ratesh, Rawin, Sangri, Sirmour, Suket, Tharoch and Theog.

✓On account of construction of Bhakra Dam, Bilaspur state was made into a separate Cheif Commissioner Province and Raja Anand Chand signed agreement on August 15, 1948.

✓The people of Himachal Pradesh classify themselves into two sub-regional identities:

A. Old Himachal- It consists of districts of
1. Bilaspur
2. Chamba
3. Kinnaur
4. Mandi
5. Shimla
6. Sirmour.
Actually the town of Shimla was included in Himachal later, but it has some area from Old Himachal.

B.  New Himachal-It consists of districts of
1. Hamirpur
2. Kangra
3. Kullu
4. Lahaul-Spiti
5. Una

✓What we see today is the combination of Old Himachal and New Himachal.
